HOW TO BOIL MUSHROOMS FOR A TENDER TEXTURE

Boiled mushrooms? Yes, you read that right. For beautifully soft and rich-tasting mushrooms, turn to the trusty boiling method. Cooking them this way means you can easily season and store them  for adding into any meal. Check the steps below on how to boil your mushrooms like a pro!

STEP-BY-STEP

Step 1: Clean the mushrooms with tissue or a quick rinse and then cut into desired size – perhaps 1 inch slices, or into quarters if you are preparing a closed cup mushroom.

Step 2: You want the mushrooms to be crowded in the pan so find a pan-size that is suitable for the amount of mushrooms you are cooking. Pour in enough water to just about cover the amount of mushrooms you want to cook (don’t add the mushrooms yet!) and wait to boil.

Step 3: After your water begins to boil, add in around a tablespoon of butter or oil and a teaspoon of salt, plus any other seasoning you fancy. Then add your mushrooms.

Step 4: It’ll take around 15 minutes at a rolling boil to cook around ½lb of medium-sized mushrooms.

Step 5: You’ll know when they’re cooked as they’ll darken in colour and soften as the water starts to evaporate. Your mushrooms are now ready to use.

Step 6: If you decide not to use all your mushrooms right away, let them cool, cover them and then pop them in the fridge. They’ll keep happily for up to five days.

TIPS FOR THE BEST BOILED MUSHROOMS

Tip 1: To help mushrooms boil quicker, cut them into smaller pieces rather than cooking them whole. Mushrooms boil better in a crowded pan so add them all in together.

Tip 2: Try using dried mushrooms – with the high heat and moisture they won’t need to be rehydrated before boiling.

Tip 3: Add salt or seasoning such as dried spices and fresh herbs to the boiling water, for mushrooms with extra flavour.
